South Sudan sees ‘shocking return’ Conflicts have occurred in recent weeks The country’s Human Rights Commission has warned of threats to withdraw peaceful developments in the northeast of the country.
Yasmin Sooka, chairman of the UN Human Rights Commission in South Sudan, said Saturday a series of violence between security forces under President Salva Kiir and the armed groups his administration claims are linked to First Deputy Vice President Riek Machar.
The situation put the couple in danger of a fragile power-sharing agreement reached in 2018, ending the civil war for five years. It also sparked fear of the war in the Upper Nile State of the country.
“We’ve witnessed a shocking return that can eliminate years of hard progress,” Sooka said.
“Not to come on and conflictleaders must urgently focus on the peace process, safeguard the human rights of South Sudanese citizens, and ensure a smooth transition to democracy. ” Sooka said.
African Union Commission Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat also expressed “deep attention” on Saturday.
In a statement, he called for an “immediate end of all hostilities”.
The latest outbreak began with the group identified by the Sudan Armed Forces and Human Rights Watch (HRW) as the “armed youth militia” in Nasir County, Nile State in February.
While it is unclear what started the fight, HRW noted that rumors of forced disarmament may have exacerbated the unrest. According to the United Nations Mission (UNMISS) in South Sudan, several clashes have occurred since then, with combatants using “heavy weapons”. The agency also reported on combat in the western Equatorial State in the southwestern part of the country.

In 2018, the two sides signed a Revival Agreement on the Resolution of the South Sudan conflict (R-ARCSS).
The purpose of the agreement is to unite the two warring factions, unite their troops in one unit, write a new constitution, prepare for the election, organize a census and disarm all other armed groups. However, no reform was carried out.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Barney Afako, another member of the United Nations Human Rights Commission in South Sudan, warned observers that they had witnessed “a return to the past that suffered reckless power struggles that once destroyed the country”.
He said South Sudan suffered “atrocities, violations of rights to serious crimes, poor economic management and ever-increasing security”.
“They deserve to get a breath and peace, not another cycle of war,” he said.
