Galal Yafai’s three best wins

Written by Declan Taylor

Jalal Yafa meets Sunny Edwards in Birmingham tonight to finally make his mark on the professional game. A win over Edwards would certainly be his best win, but what has been his best win so far?

Carlos Vado Batista, 27.2.22, London – TKO 5

After winning gold at the 2020 Olympics, Yafai flipped to much fanfare and fell into the deep end in his 10-round debut against the powerful Carlos Vado Bautista, who had a winning record. But Yafai clearly wanted to make a statement and did so by dismantling the Mexican visitor throughout the first four rounds before his corner took him out 2:11 into the fifth.

Tommy Frank, 19.8.23, Birmingham – TKO 1

Former British champion Tommy Frank was expected to give the unbeaten Yafai some resistance but he was down within 30 seconds of a thundering right hook. Frank managed to beat the count but Yafai was not calmed down as he continued to unload with both hands. The towel had already arrived by the time referee John Latham decided to wave it with just 100 seconds to go.

Augustin Gauto, 4/6/24, Las Vegas – TKO 9

There could be some big nights in Las Vegas later in Yafai’s career and he made sure his Sin City debut ended in style against Argentinian Agustin Gauto with a 21-1 scoreline. The Briton also had to deal with a chop from an accidental header in sixth place but that did little to keep him off course. Yafai maintained his high tempo throughout the match and Gauto looked exhausted in stoppage time with 20 seconds left in the eighth minute when referee Raul Caiz Junior stepped in to stop what had become completely one-way traffic for Yafai.
